Sambalpur, May 23: The Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla, which is the biggest government-run hospital in Western Odisha, is planning to start an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) facility in the hospital.
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a complex series of procedures used to help with fertility or prevent genetic problems and assist with the conception of a child. During IVF, mature eggs are collected (retrieved) from ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a lab. IVF is the most effective form of assisted reproductive technology, said a doctor.
Director of VIMSAR, Lalit Meher said, the facility at VIMSAR will benefit those who are not able to afford the high cost of private clinics. We have the doctors with the required expertise to start the facility at the hospital but the health care center here lacks the required equipment. We will send a proposal to the government to provide the equipment to start the facility at the hospital at the earliest. If required, we will also send some doctors for training after we get the nod from the government, he said.
Meher further said the facility is available in many private clinics. However, many people do not even think of IVF treatment as it costs lakhs. But the poor people will be able to avail the facility free of cost if it starts at this government-run hospital. There is a growing demand for these treatments to be available in government hospitals, he added.
Superintendent of VIMSAR, Dr. Lalmohan Nayak said, if the proposal, which has been planned for the benefit of the poor, is materialized, the VIMSAR will also be able to offer all common infertility treatment procedures. If the VIMSAR’s proposal gets the nod, it will be the first state government-run hospital to start an IVF facility in the state, he added.
Multiple research studies have shown that infertility is rising among men and women across all economic classes. To make IVF accessible for everyone, it is essential to start the treatment in government hospitals as well, said a doctor of the hospital.
