Delhi’s AQI Update: Moderate for Some, Poor for Others

0

On Saturday morning, the air quality across Delhi-NCR decided to act as a balance between bearable and troublesome. The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) for the Delhi area stood at 195, a mere “moderate” with such a number far from calling for an alarm. Still, it is not a green signal either, especially for especially sensitive groups like toddlers and people suffering from chronic respiratory disorders.

Who Breathes Easier, Who Doesn’t

  • Mandir Marg: This place had the cleanest air in the city (relatively) with AQI 136, falling in the very bottom part of the “moderate” range. While somehow still breathing less offensive here, one won’t be jumping for joy soon enough.
  • Bawana: Quite the opposite was Bawana which suffered from an AQI of 270, thereby slipping in the “poor” category. In other words, air here becomes not only on the unkind side but hugely unfriendly.

This wide dispersion of air quality in the city is a bleak reminder: your surroundings may just spell your lungs’ fates, whether good or otherwise.

Understanding What “Moderate” Stands For

If you thought, “195 doesn’t sound that bad,” let’s take it step by step. A “moderate” AQI means that although the air is not deadly, it is not quite safe either. For individuals who are sensitive, mild respiratory discomfort may occur with prolonged exposure.

What You Must Do to Stay Safe

Whether you are in a “moderate” or “bad” AQI area, it is always better to take the necessary safety measures:

  • Limit Outdoor Activity: This is particularly during the periods when air pollution hits the peak-the early hours of the morning and very late in the evening.
  • Cover Your Face: Buy a certified N95 mask. Your lungs will thank you.
  • Observe the AQI Levels: Use air-quality-improvement apps and to manage one time outdoors.
  • Indoor Safety: Use air purifiers in the closed environment and mostly keep windows closed during the peak pollution.

Long-term remediation: Is there cause to hope?

Delhi’s air pollution has the appearance of a loaded gun. The factor-multipliers deserving attention include: controlling vehicular emissions, regulating industrial pollution, and increase in green cover. However, it is imperative to put the actions beyond paper and promises. Right now, the air of Delhi rests like that faulty friend who doesn’t show up when required. Till then, do wear masks and setters, keep the
