Bhubaneswar, June 25: Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati on Wednesday described tourism as a key driver of economic growth, calling it one of the most vibrant and high-potential sectors. He was speaking at the valedictory ceremony of the 6th edition of the Odisha Tourism Conclave, organised by the Hotel & Restaurant Association of Odisha (HRAO) in Bhubaneswar.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor highlighted tourism’s capacity to generate large-scale direct and indirect employment across sectors such as hospitality, food and beverages, transportation, handicrafts, and cultural activities. “Tourism also plays a vital role in trade, investment, infrastructure development, and social inclusion,” he said, adding that it contributes to the conservation of cultural and natural heritage while advancing sustainable development goals.

Appreciating the Hotel & Restaurant Association of Odisha for hosting the conclave and supporting the growth of the hospitality sector, the Governor said Odisha has many regions with unique attractions, making it a rich and exciting destination for tourists. From ancient temples and scenic landscapes to art, culture, and wildlife, the state offers something for everyone. “I assure my full support and guidance in making Odisha a globally admired tourism destination,” he added.

The Governor highlighted significant improvements in infrastructure, international flight connectivity, and environment-friendly transport options in recent years. He stressed the need to develop Jagannath Dham as a global spiritual hub and to promote Buddhist sites like Ratnagiri, Udayagiri, and Lalitgiri among visitors from Southeast Asia. He also said Odisha has the potential to emerge as a leader in eco-tourism.

Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, he said tourism is now a national priority. World-class tourism infrastructure, he added, is essential to achieving the goals of Vikshit Odisha by 2036 and Vikshit Bharat by 2047.

He also emphasised the importance of building a strong cultural economy by promoting Odisha’s traditional crafts and training youth in hospitality, languages, and tourism management.

Chairman of HRAO, J.K. Mohanty, delivered the welcome address. The event saw the participation of policymakers, industry experts, and key stakeholders from across the tourism and hospitality sectors.
