Bhubaneswar: Om Birla, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP, has been re-elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha. Representing Kota in Rajasthan, Om Birla defeated Kodikunnil Suresh, an eight-time MP from Mavelikara, Kerala. Historically, Lok Sabha Speaker elections were held in 1952, 1967, and 1976. After 48 years, another election for the Speaker’s post has taken place, marking this as a significant event. Both Prime Minister Modi and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, along with other MPs, have congratulated Om Birla.
Being the Speaker of the Lok Sabha in a vast country like India is a challenging task. During the sessions, the Speaker must manage both the ruling and opposition parties, ensuring impartiality despite being affiliated with a particular party. The Speaker balances the activities of both sides to maintain smooth functioning, as the discussions in the House are meant for the people’s benefit. The Indian Parliament represents the aspirations of 1.4 billion citizens, making its conduct crucial for strengthening democracy.
Responsibilities During Amrit Kaal
Prime Minister Modi mentioned that Om Birla is assuming his responsibilities for the second term during Amrit Kaal. His five years of experience and that of the members will guide the House during this critical period. In his constituency, Birla has worked on maternal and child care, healthcare, and promoting sports. The last Lok Sabha was considered a golden period in parliamentary history, with significant and transformative decisions like the Women’s Empowerment Act, Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization, and various bills related to social security and data protection.
Om Birla’s Record
Om Birla has made a record by being re-elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha. His first term lasted from June 19, 2019, to June 24, 2024, and he is now starting his second term. Before him, five others have served as Speaker for two consecutive terms. These include M.A. Ayyangar, Gurdial Singh Dhillon, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, Balram Jakhar, and G.M.C. Balayogi.
Privileges for the Speaker
The Speaker presides over Lok Sabha sessions and manages its operations. For this role, they receive a good salary and other benefits. According to the 1954 Parliamentary Act, which was amended in 2010, the Speaker receives a monthly salary of 1 lakh rupees. They also get a constituency allowance of 70,000 rupees and an additional 2,000 rupees for each meeting attended. After their term, they receive a monthly allowance of 20,000 rupees, plus a pension and an extra 1,500 rupees as an additional allowance. The Speaker and their family enjoy travel allowances similar to other ministers, along with free residence, travel, and boarding facilities. They also receive free electricity, phone, peon, staff services, and medical care.
