Uttarkashi earthquake

The Uttarkashi region of Uttarakhand was shaken by an earthquake on January 24, 2025, measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale. The National Centre for Seismology reported that it occurred at 8:19 AM IST of 5 kilometres deep. The quake’s epicentre is situated at 30.85°N latitude and 78.60°E longitude.

People were up with trembles, very mild and enough for a few to wake up and fear what impact would be felt in subsequent days. Fortunately, no injury or any kind of damage has been reported up to now.

Reasons for the Earthquake-Prone Nature of Uttarkashi

The Uttarkashi district lies in an active seismic zone due to the ongoing groundbreaking  movements of the Indian and Eurasian plates. With the Himalayan rift being one of the most quake-impacted regions of the world, several little tremors are prime reminders that the area can be prone to earthquakes.

While a 3.5-magnitude quake doesn’t cause damage, it opens the eyes of Uttarakhand as to where they stand concerning disaster preparedness; this area, however, inherently fragile in ecological take, has built an unmatched level of alarm among all classes in the territory.

What the National Centre for Seismology Said

The NCS shared details of the quake through a post on X (formerly Twitter): it said an “EQ of M:3.5, On:24.01.2025 08:19:28 IST, Lat: 30.85 N, long: 78.60 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand.”

The official report displaying latitude, longitude, and depth pointed clearly towards transparency in real-time updates.

A Reminder for Earthquake Preparedness

Though light, these kinds of earthquakes vividly show the need to be on alert. Below are some hints:

  • Be informed: Follow seismic activity updates from credible sources such as NCS.
  • Stabilize your household: Secure heavy furniture to walls and keep emergency supplies readily available.
  • Know your escape routes: Be familiar with safe locations within your home and place of business.
