Sambalpur, April 11: The PG Department of Home Science and the School of Chemistry of Sambalpur University achieved a unique feat by bagging a patent from Indian Patent Office for their invention ‘Premix Composition of Ragi Based Cake and the Cake Thereof’.

As per the inventors, the cake has therapeutic value and it will be helpful in eradicating malnutrition, Osteoporosis, Osteopenia, Rickets and anemia from the society.

The Vice Chancellor of Sambalpur University, Sanjiv Mittal appreciated the inventors of the premix of the Ragi based cake, Reader and Head of the Home Science Department, Chandrashree Lenka, Professor in the School of Chemistry, Pramila Kumari Mishra, Research Associate of School of Chemistry, Achyut Kumar Biswal, Research Scholar of Department of Home Science, Trupti Pradhan and Laboratory Assistant and Research Scholar in the Department of Home Science, Tripti Kumari for the achievement.

Chandrashree Lenka said, Ragi is highly nutritious and rich in phytochemicals and micronutrients, especially in calcium and phosphorus. It is also rich in protein. However, since the taste of the nutritious food is not good, the children and even the adults do not generally get attracted to eat it.  But when we talk about cake, people of all ages like to eat it because it is delicious. However, the cakes available in the market are high in calories and the high calories food is not advisable for anyone because of the prevalence of obesity and cardiac problems. Hence, they tried to develop a cake with Ragi having low calories and finally succeeded. It has therapeutic value and it will be helpful in fighting malnutrition and many other health problems, she said.

She further said, the cost of Ragi based cake is also remarkably lower than the cakes available in the market. The cost of the cake will be only around Rs 2 if the Ragi and wheat of the Public Distribution System (PDS) is used for preparing it. The low-cost cake can also be supplied to the Anganwadi centers for the children enrolled there, she said.  The inventors of the ‘Premix Composition of Ragi Based Cake and the Cake Thereof’ filed for the patent in the month of August, 2020 and they were granted the patent from the Indian Patent Office, Government of India on March 31, 2021.
