PM lays foundation stone for IIM Sambalpur’s permanent campus

Sambalpur, Jan 02: Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi said more and more numbers of Indian origin Multinational Companies (MNCs) will be established in the country in the days to come.

Addressing after laying the foundation stone for the permanent campus of Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur (IIM-S) at Basantpur located on the outskirts of Sambalpur city through video conferencing on Saturday, he said today’s startups will become MNCs of tomorrows. The youths of the country are showing interest for startups and majority of startups are coming up at Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities of the country. Even the scope for startups has increased during the period of Covid crisis. The ‘Brand India’ will get a global recognition in the new decade, he said.   

Lauding the IIM-S for its core values of Inclusion, Innovation and Integrity, Modi said the country has to adopt the management skill of the institution for development of those lagging behind.

He said, the area where the permanent campus of IIM-S being developed is going to be a ‘educational hub’ as the area houses a medical university, an engineering university, three universities, Sainik school and police training centre. The entire area is going to be a practical lab, he said.

Besides, there is immense potential for development of tourism in the nearby areas where the permanent campus of IIM-S being developed. Tourist places like Hirakud Dam and Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary are located near it and the students of the IIM-S could develop the tourism potential with their innovative ideas and managerial skills, he said.

He further said Sambalpuri handloom products are unique for its tie and dye Ikat fabric and it is the duty of the students of the IIM-S to make local of Sambalpur vocal. The development of people is only possible through new and innovative ideas. The IIM-S could play a pivotal role in making local things popular globally, he said.

Among others, Governor of Odisha, Ganeshi Lal, Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, Minister of Education, Government of India, Ramesh Pokhriyal and Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan attended the foundation laying ceremony virtually. Apart from this, Minister of State of MOAHD & Fisheries and MSME, Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Director of IIM-S, Mahadeo Jaiswal were present physically on the occasion. Moreover, the foundation stone laying ceremony was attended by invitees, which include dignitaries from Government of India, Government of Odisha, industry leaders, PSUs executives, directors of IIMs, IITs, IISERs, members from weaving communities, members from farming communities besides students and faculties of the institution.

The IIM-S, which was established in 2015, is operating from the campus of Sambalpur University temporarily now. The permanent campus of IIM-S is being developed over an area of 200 acres of land at an estimated cost of Rs 401.97 crore.
