Bhubaneswar: The Odia film industry has lost a true icon. Veteran actor Uttam Mohanty, who defined an era of Odia cinema, passed away at the age of 66. With his demise, an irreplaceable void has been left in the hearts of his fans and the Odia film fraternity.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his grief, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Odisha’s beloved actor Uttam Mohanty. His contributions to Odia cinema will be remembered forever. My prayers are with his family.” The CM has also ordered state honors for his last rites, acknowledging his immense impact on Odia culture.

A Career That Defined Odia Cinema

Starting his journey in 1977 with Abhimaan, Uttam Mohanty quickly rose to fame, delivering one hit after another. His performances in classics like Nijhum Ratira Sathi (1979), Phula Chandana (1982), Jhiati Sita Pari (1983), and Danda Balunga (1984) solidified his place as one of Odisha’s most beloved actors.

Beyond Odia cinema, he showcased his versatility by acting in around 30 Bengali films and even a Bollywood project, Naya Zaher. His presence extended to television as well, with notable roles in serials like Sara Akasha.
